Our Skin and Healthy Ageing
There is no reason why we can't look our best at any age! And with the latest in hormone testing procedures we can see exactly …………….[add intro to female and adrenal hormone function testing here from Nutri Path]
In a society that's 'youth obsessed' it's important to remember that our skin, hair and nail health is dependent on what happens in our gut, just as for other organs. So, understanding the process of change and making appropriate adjustments to our diet and lifestyle as well as including nutritional and herbal medicines, will ensure our skin, hair and nails look their best – glowing and healthy.
As we age our hormones change so it's simply a matter of knowing what those changes mean for us and implementing strategies to support those changes. But how do we know where where our hormone levels are at?
During our late 30s and 40s we move into 'perimenopause' and just as we didn't suddenly arrive at puberty, our hormones change gradually and in a subtle way. We may not even notice these changes happening. All our hormones act in symphony just like an orchestra. The music of our oestrogen, progesterone, testosterone and even our adrenalin, insulin and a hormone called DHEAS affect our skins’ integrity. Collagen and elastin (the tissue that gives our skin it's plump vitality) decreases as our hormone levels decline. But our other hormones like adrenalin and DHEAS influence our stress response, so may influence skin's redness, pigmentation, flushing, and other changes in our skin appearance.
Remember also that our skin is a major detoxification organ and we eliminate toxins and also water through our skin. Drink up! We generally need 2 lites a day and more depending on our exercise regime to keep our skin hydrated.
Tips to help our skin move into that change to facilitate maximum skin nourishment include:
The Anti Oxidants. Vitamins A, C, E and the mineral Zinc are critical for elastin and collagen production so think red, yellow, blue and green in your daily food intake. Blue you might ask? Blueberries are a great choice and are well researched to assist healthy brain function – bonus!
Beautiful skin happily breathes and detoxifies itself with the aid of the food group containing 'bitters' in our diet. Make delicious salads with small amount of watercress, chicory, radichio and endive. The greener the better as Iron and chlorophyll (the good green ingredient) also help in the cleansing process.
To maximise healthy Oestrogen production the nutrients Genestin and Diadzin from soy products - tofu, soy milk and edemame make yummy dietary additions. Bur remember balance is important and we can overdo these foods.
Ensuring we eat enough protein (usually 30% of our diet needs to be protein) to give us our full range of B vitamin and amino acids to fight the ageing affects of stress, keeping adrenalin balanced. Fish especially the deep sea cold water fish like tuna, salmon and sardines contain the Omega 3 essential fatty acids that re essential for the anti inflammatory effect on the skin.
Supplements containing the above nutrients will help only when we have an adequate diet.
Sleep is frequently underrated and increasingly research shows how important a god night’'s rest is for the repair and regeneration of collagen and elastin. Also here's where that DHEAS hormone can rear its head so enjoy getting some shut eye and snuggle up.
